Fact vs. Fiction

These stories live at the point where documented history meets imaginative interpretation.

History provides the framework. Fiction provides the breath within it.

This page exists to clarify how that relationship is handled, and why certain elements may be altered, compressed, or reshaped for narrative purposes.


What Is Historical

Where the stories reference real institutions, social structures, laws, public events, or documented practices, they are grounded in research.

Dates of major events, known political realities, material culture, and institutional frameworks are checked against primary or reputable secondary sources. The social tone of a period, its language rhythms, its hierarchies and assumptions, are researched to ensure plausibility rather than modern projection.

When a real historical event or setting appears in the narrative, its broader context remains intact, even if the characters themselves are fictional.


What Is Invented

Characters, private conversations, hidden motives, and personal histories are the realm of fiction.

Many of the most important human details in any period were never recorded. Diaries were lost. Letters destroyed. Ordinary voices rarely entered official archives. Fiction occupies that silence.

Composite characters may be created to represent broader social forces. Timelines may be slightly compressed to maintain narrative momentum. Events that unfolded over months may occur within days. Locations may be adjusted for clarity.

These changes are intentional craft decisions, not historical oversights.


Compression, Conflation, and Clarity

Narrative demands coherence.

Real life is diffuse and often contradictory. Historical records can be fragmented or uneven. To render a period readable and emotionally resonant, certain techniques are sometimes used:

Compression, where timelines are tightened to maintain dramatic flow.
Conflation, where several minor historical figures or events are represented through a single fictional lens.
Selective focus, where the story follows one thread while others remain in the background.

These methods serve readability, but they do not alter the underlying structure of the historical world being portrayed.

The intention is to preserve the integrity of the era, even when the details are shaped for narrative form.


The Boundary

The line between fact and fiction is drawn deliberately.

Public record is respected. Private interiority is imagined. Institutional frameworks remain historically credible. Personal journeys unfold within those frameworks.

Where the narrative departs from documented record in meaningful ways, this is done consciously and in service of story rather than convenience. The broader social, cultural, and material realities of the time are not rewritten to suit modern sensibilities.

Fiction may explore what could have happened. It does not claim to replace what did.


Research and Transparency

Research articles published alongside the fiction provide context for readers who wish to explore the documented foundations of certain themes, such as policing structures, folklore practices, social conditions, or cultural beliefs.

These articles include clear citations and Works Cited sections, allowing readers to verify sources independently.

The aim is not to blur fiction and scholarship, but to allow them to sit side by side. One offers narrative immersion. The other offers documented context.

Readers are trusted to understand the distinction.


Why It Matters

Historical fiction shapes imagination. Even subtle details influence how a period is perceived.

Accuracy in tone and structure matters. So does honesty about invention.
