About & Method

This section gathers together the foundations behind the work you see on this site.

The stories may stand on their own, but they are not written in isolation. They emerge from research, reflection, lived experience, and a deliberate method that balances historical fidelity with narrative clarity. These pages exist for readers who want to look beneath the surface, to understand how the work is shaped and why certain choices are made.

They are not required reading. They are simply an open door.

The Author

Richard Odell writes at the intersection of history, folklore, and lived memory. His fiction grows from documented realities, but it is not constrained by them. Instead, it seeks to honour the texture of a period, the language of its people, and the quiet undercurrents that rarely make it into official records.

His approach is neither purely academic nor purely imaginative. It is grounded, but not rigid. The aim is not to recreate the past with forensic exactness, but to inhabit it responsibly.

Experience outside the literary world also informs this work. Years spent navigating institutions, bureaucracy, and real systems of power have shaped an interest in how authority functions, how language carries weight, and how structures influence ordinary lives. Those concerns often surface in both the fiction and the accompanying research.

Research Approach

Research begins with primary and institutional sources wherever possible. Archival material, contemporary newspapers, official reports, and historical scholarship form the backbone of the factual framework. Secondary works are used to provide context, interpretation, and debate.

The goal is clarity rather than accumulation. Research is gathered to illuminate a question, not to overwhelm the narrative.

Each research article published on this site includes structured citations and a Works Cited section. Sources are linked directly so readers can verify, explore further, or challenge interpretation. Authority is not claimed by tone alone, but by transparency.

Where a story draws directly from a documented event, location, or historical practice, that relationship is made clear in the research section of the site. Where imagination takes over, that boundary is acknowledged rather than blurred.

Historical Accuracy and Creative Interpretation

No historical novel can reproduce the past exactly. Records are incomplete. Voices are lost. Everyday details are rarely preserved with the clarity we might wish for.

This work follows three guiding principles:

  1. Material facts, when used, are respected.
  2. Speculation is signposted through tone and narrative framing.
  3. Emotional truth is treated as seriously as documented fact.

Dates, public events, and institutional structures are checked against reliable sources. Social customs, language patterns, and material culture are researched to ensure plausibility. At the same time, the inner lives of characters are necessarily imagined. Fiction exists in that space between what is recorded and what must be inferred.

The intention is not to distort history, but to engage with it thoughtfully.

The Line Between Fact and Story

Readers will sometimes encounter research articles that sit alongside fiction. This is intentional.

The research pages explore themes such as policing, occult practice, folklore, social structures, and Edwardian life in greater depth. These subjects are examined independently of the narrative, allowing them to stand as informative pieces in their own right.

When a research article inspires a diary entry or fictional episode, the connection is organic rather than formulaic. The site is structured so that research and story support one another without collapsing into each other. One offers grounding. The other offers meaning.

If a reader wishes only to follow the stories, nothing here interrupts that experience. If they wish to examine the scaffolding behind it, the material is available.

Citation and Transparency

All formal research articles use numbered in-text citations linked to a Works Cited section at the end of the page. These citations are drawn from reputable sources, including academic publications, libraries, museums, and official institutions.

This approach serves three purposes:

• It allows readers to verify claims.
• It signals where interpretation rests on established scholarship.
• It distinguishes researched material from narrative invention.

Citations are not included to imitate academic writing, but to maintain intellectual honesty. Where uncertainty exists in the historical record, it is acknowledged.

Transparency builds trust. It also allows disagreement. Both are welcome.

Why This Matters

Historical fiction carries influence. Even quiet stories shape how readers imagine the past. With that influence comes responsibility.

The aim of this site is to create work that feels immersive and reflective without being careless with fact. Research deepens story. Story gives human form to research.

The method is simple:

Study carefully.
Write honestly.
Cite clearly.
Let the story breathe.

These pages exist so that the process remains visible. Not intrusive, not academic for its own sake, but open.

Readers who wish to step further into the background of the work will find it here.

Readers who prefer to remain within the story may simply turn the page.
